Body Image Support

(6 Weeks)

The Calgary Silver Linings Foundation offers a support group for adults who are struggling with BODY IMAGE concerns. This group is for adults that are 18 years and older and will cover topics including, but not limited to, how to manage shame and guilt, challenging unhelpful core beliefs, negative self-talk, body distortions, working to build a more positive relationship with you and your body, and communication skills. This is a supportive environment where you can speak openly and learn skills to manage the troubling distortions that are often associated with eating disorders.

This group does not differentiate between the different types of eating disorders because it’s our goal to focus on creating support, to bring awareness to thought distortions and help to create more positive self-talk.

Support Group for
Adults struggling with Binge Eating

(8 weeks)

Are you currently experiencing Binge Eating Disorder? This support group is for you.

There is a lot of shame and guilt involved with binge eating. Feeling a sense of being “out of control” is common. Food may feel like an enemy. Not unlike a friendship, we are in a relationship with food... This group was developed to help you explore this relationship. Which behaviours bring you closer to and further away from how you want that relationship to feel? Learn about how binge eating creates short-term relief from uncomfortable emotional states. In this group, you will be supported in identifying the elements that trigger your binge eating behaviour. Tools will be provided to help you avoid bingeing and feel at peace with food. A life of food freedom is possible for you! This group will be a safe place for you to voice your experiences alongside others who understand.

Examples of topics that may be explored:

* Identifying binge triggers (situations, emotions, memories, body sensations and urges)

* Using mindfulness to become more present in the face of these feelings and behaviours

* How to process your emotions without turning to food for relief

* Building self-compassion in order to care for yourself and your emotions

The group will include a combination of skill-learning and group sharing.

Please note: This support group is not therapy and is not a substitute for treatment.

The Art of Healing

Art Therapy Group

(5 weeks)

In this group, we’ll be using art to reflect upon and guide our healing journeys. Within the supportive environment of a group and with the guidance of a professional art therapist, we will create art each week using a variety of different materials, in response to a theme or prompt. It is important to know that we will be engaging with the art materials in a spontaneous, reflective and self-soothing manner, so no previous art experience or skill is required.

What to expect each session:

1. An art-based check-in to share visually or verbally how we are feeling

2. A brief introduction or description of the weekly prompt/directive

3. Creating art

4. Time to share and/or process our art

Don’t consider yourself an artist? No worries! This group requires no prior artistic experience or skill.

Parent & Loved Ones
WORKSHOP

If someone you love and care for is struggling with an eating disorder, know that you are not alone. We are here to offer support.

The journey to eating disorder (ED) recovery can be long and challenging, affecting not just the individual, but the entire family. While the most visible symptom may appear to be your child’s struggle with eating, it’s important not to overlook the deeper dynamics that contribute to this behaviour. Parents often face daily worries, unsure whether their child will recover and overwhelmed by misconceptions, such as the belief that an eating disorder is a lifelong illness. Please know this: recovery is possible.

This 3-hour workshop is designed to help parents understand these hidden dynamics, explore why certain strategies may not always seem effective, and provide the tools you need to support your child’s recovery. It’s also a chance for parents to share their challenges and ask questions about any aspect of treatment and recovery.

Topics may include:

Part 1 – Anxiety, Adolescence and Body Image

Part 2 – Co-regulation and Influence – What can parents do?

Part3 – Questions & Answers

This group is intended for parents of children ages 10 - 25

Support Group for
Teens with Eating Disorders

(4 weeks online)

Silver Linings Foundation offers this online support group designed to give adolescents in eating disorder recovery a safe place to feel understood and validated in their current experiences. One of the most challenging aspects of being a teenager with an eating disorder is feeling alone in the process. Oftentimes, well-meaning family and friends can’t fully understand what eating disorder recovery truly feels like. It is for this reason that our Teen Support Group is facilitated by an Eating Disorder Recovery Coach with lived-experience and supervised by the Program Clinical Supervisor. Mentorship from a lived-experience perspective can be incredibly effective in lessening feelings of isolation and hopelessness by providing proof that recovery is possible.

Sessions will be flexibly structured to suit the needs of the participants and will include:

  • Group discussion of age-relevant topics (social media, body image, friendships, specific challenges of having an eating disorder as a teenager)

  • Creative self-expression activities

  • Self-reflection prompts and group discussion

  • A safe and confidential space to share feelings and experiences, either verbally or in the chat

  • Q&A from a lived-experience perspective of  someone who remembers what it’s like to be a teenager with an eating disorder

The overall goal of our teen group is to provide understanding, validation and a sense of hope to participants through engaging content, lived-experience mentorship and encouragement of emotional regulation skills.

Eligibility for the group:

This group is open to teens between the ages of 12-17.

This is a community-based support group with limited resources and it is expected that struggles with suicidal ideation and any self-harm behaviours are addressed appropriately with your treatment team. Adolescents must also be medically stable. Both caregiver and teen must consent to participating in the group.

This group does not differentiate between the different types of eating disorders. All are welcome!

Support Group for
Adults with Eating Disorders

(6 weeks online)

“Making My Skills Work For Me” Group

It is a common complaint that we hear – clients leave programs with binders full of skills that are supposed to work in a time of need. However, most clients find that they cannot access the skills when they are most dysregulated and end up feeling it is a personal failure. The truth is that learning skills is not like learning social studies or mathematics. For skills to work, they have to be first understood and practiced before they can be implemented, especially when we are triggered and upset.

In this group we will bring up and discuss some of the popular and useful skills, take time to understand how they work and when they are most handy. We will also talk about the times you have tried to use a skill and explore why they have not worked in the past. Different skills work or different people and we will also explore how you can find the skills that work best for eachperson.

This 6-week, online support group offers individuals (18 years and older) an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of their eating disorders and connect with others who share similar experiences.

This group will help participants to:

Explore the deeper emotional reasons why a person may develop an eating disorder

  • Provide a sense of hope and motivation in the recovery process

  • Gain a better understanding of how to reach sustained recovery

  • Teach practical coping skills

This group is open to all types of eating disorder-related concerns. It is our goal to focus on the underlying emotional issues that are common to all eating disorders. Everyone is welcome.

Please note: This support group is not therapy and is not a substitute for treatment.

Peer Support is a no-cost program for anyone
working towards eating disorder recovery.

Your are not alone.

Our Peer Support Program is flexible, non judgmental and deeply empathetic.

Mentors and mentees will be matched based on personal preferences and suitability. Once matched you will both decide what support will look like—how often to connect, what format (phone, video, etc.) and what types of conversations are helpful. The peer support relationship is non-judgemental, empathetic and continues for as long as you need it.

How is it different from therapy?
This program is intended to be additional support that compliments therapy. Mentors are not therapists; the value of this program comes from connecting with someone who has lived-experience. Speaking with someone in this capacity can be incredibly validating and can bolster the progress you’ve already made in formal treatment. Peer support is not meant to feel like another appointment, but rather flexible support when you need it most.

Who are the mentors?
Our diverse team of volunteer mentors have one thing in common and it’s that they deeply understand the highs and lows of eating disorder recovery because they have all walked that path themselves. They also understand how important empathetic support can be while you are in this chapter. All of them have received clinician supervised training and are available to help.

Important!
Peer Support is not a stand-alone treatment. Current or previous work with a treatment team is required in order to be matched with a mentor. Please review this PDF document for an in-depth explanation of what peer support can and can’t offer.

For Canadian residents ages 15 and up • For all identities • For all stages of recovery

Your experience can Make a Difference

Why Become a Peer Mentor?

What In 2021 we launched Alberta’s first eating disorder peer mentoring program. Since launching we have trained 39 mentors and matched over 60 mentees. The program has been an incredible success for both mentors and mentees. All of our program participants who trained to become mentors did so because they wanted to use their difficult experiences for something good. While the focus of the program is to support individuals who are currently working through recovery; one of the amazing benefits is that it helps our mentors too. Having one on one impact can be meaningful for you too.

What is involved?

Our mentors are certified through a virtual training program and matched with mentees based on age, gender, and type of eating disorder experience. Once certified, mentors have the ability to choose their level of mentorship availability.  Peer mentors utilize their own lived experience of recovery from an eating disorder to motivate, inspire and support others currently in the process of recovery.

How to Apply

To apply, please complete the following:

  1. Review the Peer Mentor position. Below, you will find a document on the Peer Mentor General Info Document. Please review this document carefully. It explains key elements of what becoming a Silver Linings Peer Mentor entails, including responsibilities, time commitment and a personal recovery requirement. Please ensure that you have a full understanding of the information in this document. Do not hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions!

Peer Mentor General Info Document 2022

  2. Complete our questionnaire. The Silver Linings Peer Mentorship Team believes that full recovery from an eating disorder is not only possible, but brings with it resilience and a unique form of understanding. We would be honored to get to know you better through a glimpse into your own recovery journey. Your answers to these questions will remain confidential and demonstrate to us your valuable perspective and potential contributions as an aspiring member of our Peer Mentor Team.

Feedback from Clients

At Calgary Silver Linings' support groups, we make every effort to provide the best knowledge and support to help individuals and families affected by eating disorders. Here is a selection of the feedback we received from our support group meetings.

If you have participated in our support groups, we invite you to contact us.

I learned how to deal with the challenges with eating disorders. The knowledge was so valuable. Thank you so much. Everything was so welcomed.

[It was so valuable] hearing other parents’ situations and getting advice from facilitators.

The sessions positively impacted my life and gave... an outlet for emotions/thoughts, sharing the struggle.
Brought us peace, something to do for us, not being alone, safe place to fall.

I finally got it! The connection between the manifestations of symptoms and the dysregulation. Also, the knowledge that the real problem is not what’s in front of me.

Made me realize I need to persevere in helping my child recover.
